An Introduction to Hanna Somatics

Thomas Hanna developed his own method of Somatic Education after studying neurology at the University of Miami Medical School. It was there that he did research into the muscular ways in which all humans respond to stress reflexes and how these full body reflexes can habituate at the level of the central nervous system, causing muscular contractions that contribute to many common physical problems.
Just as the brain can teach us how to ride a bike, throw a ball, eat with a spoon, it also teaches us to adapt to stress by altering our posture, gait, movement. If the brain teaches the muscles to remain contracted, the brain can also be re-trained so the muscles can relax and release again. Muscles learn through movement, so they must be re-educated again through movement and with awareness so that the brain is involved.
In this workshop you will be given the opportunity to move with more awareness (somatically), and you will be shown how to pandiculate movements in order to re-set muscle length so that held contractions can be released and the body can return to its natural state of relaxation. This approach can be applied to most movement practices, including yoga and Pilates.

Are you interested in joining a regular monthly (initially) life drawing/capturing movement drawing class at the ENERGYBODi Studio?
Whether you are a complete beginner, a more experienced artist or someone who would just like to try something new, why not have a go!
The class would be tutor-led by artist, Stan Harland in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. As this is a mixed ability class, I will be guided by the needs of members, so don’t be intimidated. Stan is a member of Clarke Holme Artists and has a studio on the floor above us and some of you may already have met him at one of our Open Days. He is passionate about capturing movement in the fields of dance, drama, music etc and has been invited to such places as Japan and Cuba to draw. Stan's work has been exhibited throughout the North West since the 1970s.
Our first 2-hour Taster Day will be held on Saturday 25 March from 1pm onwards, followed by 5 further Saturdays (with a discount for those who attend all six sessions.)

Breathwork takes most people far beyond traditional cognitive therapies to provide a deeper, non-verbal path to healing. It assists us to understand the effects our birth has had on our self-esteem, our relationships, family dynamics and other life issues with which we struggle. It leads to Self-Mastery. Its innate capacity to emerge healing of life traumas lies in the powerful emotional and spiritual releases that it addresses. Breathwork is also an awareness process that has the ability to emerge and release our entrenched patterns from the past that no longer support our current direction in life.
Breathwork is a safe and gentle process that encourages everyone to experience, express and release his or her emotions. It uses the breath to facilitate vital change and transformation that lasts.
Sessions last 90 minutes.

A Five Stages Movement for Freedom and Mind Body Re-centering

The Nia 5 Stages is an integrative movement practice based on five developmental moves: embryonic, creeping, crawling, standing and walking. Retracing the stages in an adult body is a pathway to reclaiming the body’s natural strength, flexibility, mobility and neural plasticity. With regular practice, these moves contribute to spinal health, re-patterning and restructuring the whole body, enhancing physical and energetic balance. What began as a personal self-healing practice for Nia co-founder Debbie Rosas, is now a mindful, meditative class experience and somatic program open to the world.

This is a beginners Workshop that gets down to detail. Pilates prioritizes the small intrinsic muscles that give deep stability and strength around the joints- not just our core (spine) but all joints. If these muscles are weak our large global muscles become tight and imbalanced as they end up supporting a weak joint structure.
There is plenty of time to ask questions, 'try' out the moves and learn about kinesthetic awareness. We will go through some of Pilates core principles and become familiar with the words and terminology that is used at ENERGYBODi so that you can then jump right into to any of our regular classes.
